“Jjajang mien, jjajang mien,
Jjajang, jjajang, jjajang mien,
With a jjajang, jjajang, jjajang mien,
Jjajang, jjajang, jjajang mien…”Everybody sing along!
I love jjajang mien. For those who don’t know, it’s a Chinese dish the Koreans have embraced. It’s got noodles like spaghetti, but instead of tomatoes or cream in their sauce, they use black bean and/or hoison sauce. It’s got ground pork, diced onions and diced cucumbers in it – and a whole buncha stuff invisible to the eye, but evident on the taste buds.
It’s effing delish! Since it comes in a huge bowl, ppl usually share it and eat it with an order of pan-fried pot-stickers (“yaki mondoo” in Korean).
But you know what I love just as much as jjajang mien? Jjang pong!
(To the tune of a porn movie bass groove)
“Jjang pong-chacka-pong pong…”
Okay I’m a nerd.
Jjang pong is a spicy seafood soup (which include octopus and shrimp) that will guarantee to clear up your sinus.
Now (some of you know where I’m going with this) what’s even better than me eating jjajang mien or jjang pong? Me eating both Jjajang Mien AND jjang pong! It’s like a foodie menage-a-trois!
And do you know where you can get such a perfect combination of spicy and savory – like the Yin and Yang – in one bowl split in half? Mandarin Garden!
It’s such a tiny unassuming place tucked away under the staircase of the strip mall that Hodori and Nak Won dominate. Blink and you’d miss it. But those “in the know” are aware of the goodness hidden away from the rest of the world zooming by on Vermont. Don’t let the working class ambience fool you – grandmothers take their grandkids here for dinner.
So if you’re in the mood for a reasonably-priced, down home flavor explosion in your mouth (wait… what?), go to Mandarin Garden!
