I like this course a lot. It’s a fun 9 hole par 29 course where you can work on your short game and still pull out the driver on a couple holes. The first and last holes are par 4 and the others are par 3. It’s just off the 10 freeway up on the hill in Monterey Park so it’s perfect after a long day at work to come here and play a round on a nice evening. They have lights so they’re open past dark and you can play a round in about 2 hours or less. The greens fees are cheap (somewhere between $10 or $15 I think). You can make reservations a week in advance. If you’re going during the week in the evening, it’s a good idea to have a reservation because they get busy. They have a driving range and putting green to practice on as well.
Here’s a quick rundown of the holes. I haven’t been there for a couple months and I don’t have a scorecard handy so I don’t know the exact yardages. Don’t hate me if I’m a little off on my estimates!
Hole 1: About 250 yards, pretty straight and a sand trap about halfway down the fairway.
Hole 2: About 150 yards and straight. Don’t slice too far or you’re down a big hill.
Hole 3: This one is fun. It’s short (120 or so, maybe shorter), but down a huge hill! The green is at a nice steep angle. Try to land below the hole because you’ll be much better putting uphill than downhill!
Hole 4: About 130 yards, uphill to the green. Tree to the left side that gets in the way. Aim to the right and there’s a hill next to the green that you might get a bounce or roll from.
Hole 5: Another around 130 yards I think, but you have to go over a tree and you can’t see the green from the tee. Don’t go too far left or you’ll hit the sand.
Hole 6: Straight, maybe 110 or 120 and a little uphill if I remember right. Hill to the right of the green that you can aim for and roll onto the green.
Hole 7: Pretty good downhill shot and longer than it looks. I usually come up short on this one. Just watch out for people driving from hole 9 on this one. If they slice it you could get hit.
Hole 8: Short (maybe 120). Pretty easy so you can make up a few strokes here if you’re not doing so well.
Hole 9: Longest hole, about 300 yards. Dogleg right, a few trees, raised green and a few sandtraps around the edge of the green. Challenging but fun hole.

LA 한인타운에서 약 10분 거리에 있는 ‘몬트레이팍 골프 클럽’이 어느덧 100만 고객 돌파를 달성했다. 특히 지난 2014년 650만 달러를 투입해 야간조명을 갖추는 등 ‘획기적 신기술을 갖춘 코스’로 대대적 리모델링을 단행한 것이 가시적으로 드러난 성과라 무척이나 고무적인 일로 받아들여지고 있다.
몬트레이팍 골프 클럽의 강점은 입지적 조건이 우수하다는 점. 710번 프리웨이를 이용할 경우 라모나 블러버드(Ramona Blvd.) 출구로 내리자마자 바로 골프장 입구를 통해 들어설 수 있는 등 교통이 무척이나 편리하다.
이러한 경사를 기념해 몬트레이팍 골프 클럽은 올해 추수감사절 연휴를 앞두고 이 골프장의 또다른 자랑거리인 ‘골프샵’에서 클럽, 장비, 골프화, 의류 등을 최대 80%까지 할인하는 빅세일 이벤트를 마련해 ‘화제’다.
17일(금)부터 19일(일)까지 단 사흘간 갖는 1년에 한번 뿐인 ‘빅세일(Big Sale)’이 바로 그 주인공이다.
이와 관련 20년 이상 골프 외길 인생을 걸어온 케빈 조 제너럴 매니저는 “지난해에 이어 두번째 갖는 세일 이벤트로 드라이버를 비롯해 아이언 클럽세트의 경우 한인 유일의 총판, 딜러십을 갖고 있는 ‘PXG(Parsons Xtreame Golf)’, ‘마루망(Maruman)’ 등의 신제품을 아낌없이 할인해 판매하게 된다”며 “직접 와보시면 알겠지만 이번 특가 이벤트에는 깜짝 놀랄 가격으로 제공하게 된다”고 강조했다.
무엇보다 몬트레이팍 골프샵만의 최대 강점은 구입하고자 하는 골프채를 바로 곁에 위치한 골프 레인지에서 직접 쳐본 뒤 구입할 수 있다는 데에 있다. 더군다나 이 골프 레인지의 규모가 예사롭지 않다. 2층 규모의 ‘자동 볼공급(Auto Tee-Up)’ 시스템을 갖춘 총 61타석의 천연잔디 페어웨이 연습장(300야드 전장)에서 시타할 수 있는 곳은 거의 유일무이하다는 골퍼들의 평가는 이를 잘 가늠케 한다.
앤디 윤 세일즈 매니저는 “이번 기회를 놓치면 크게 아쉬워할 의류 품목들을 다수 구비하고 있다”며 “한인들이 좋아하는 J Lindberg, PXG, 라코스테(Lacoste), MDC, Chervo 등의 유명 브랜드 의류제품들이 최소 30%에서 최대 80%까지 세일을 하고 있다”고 소개했다.
아울러 200달러 대의 고급 골프화인 ‘에코(Ecco Shoes)’제품이 일제히 50% 할인율을 적용해 100달러에 기획 품목으로 마련된 것은 한인 골퍼들에게 희소식이 될 전망. 또한 이번 세일기간 동안 드라이빙 레인지 볼을 구입할 경우 더블 행사로 100달러 구매시 200달러를 제공하는 서비스를 실시한다.
한편 이 골프장은 리모델링후 야간조명을 갖춰 밤 11시까지 골프를 즐길 수 있다. 전장은 파4홀 2개(1홀, 9홀), 파3홀 7개를 갖춘 ‘9홀(1489야드)’로 변신했다. 골프샵의 영업시간은 금요일 포함 평일의 경우 오전 9시 30분~오후 8시, 토요일은 오전 9시 30분~오후 7시, 일요일은 오전 10시~오후6시까지다.
