Domaine de la Solitude – Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The Lançon family, owners of Domaine de la Solitude, descend directly from the 12th Century Barberini family of Rome.
The best known of the family, Maffeo Barberini, was a papal nuncio, or diplomatic representative, in Paris from 1604 to 1606, and was made Pope in Rome under the name Pope Urban VIII.
Two of his nephews became cardinals and a part of the family then settled down in Avignon. In the 1980s, brothers Michel and Jean Lançon took the future of Domaine de la Solitude in their hands, focusing attention on the vineyards.
Over the past several years, Michel’s son Florent Lançon has taken over the day-to-day operations of Domaine de la Solitude, continuing to make improvements while preserving the traditions of his father and uncle.
“Located in the heart of the appellation, in the La Solitude lieu-dit, just on the western edge of the La Crau plateau, Domaine de la Solitude has been in the Lançon family for generations (the estate was created in the 17th century). Today, the winemaking reins are in the hands of the young, yet incredibly talented Florent Lançon, who has a green thumb when it comes to growing just about anything (ask to see his greenhouse if you visit!).” – Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate

The Grapes of Chateauneuf du Pape
A symphony of 13 grape varietals:
A wine of Chateauneuf du Pape has the full power of a symphony. Each sip seems to release the most beautiful sounds. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre are the three grape varieties that are dominant and from which the wine gets its strength and softness, color and solidity.
Then, strange notes, new combinations will appear with the other varieties. Just as minor tones exhale slight nuances, they complete the harmony with light and subtle touches. The pace accelerates, arousing intense bouquets, the pleasure reaches fullness. As these symphonies leave the ear with the impression of their supreme wealth, the symphony of the 13 varieties of grapes inspires a unique passion for exceptional wine: the Chateauneuf du Pape.

Domaine de la Solitude – Prestigious Cuvées Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC
These ‘’cuvées’’ come from a very strict selection of some of the Domaine’s best parcels.
These cuvées are jewels and are only produced when the vintage allows it.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Cuvée Barberini” Rouge
Blend: 45% Grenache, 45% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre
Cuvée Barberini Red – It is a tribute to our ancestors the Barberini Family, produced when the vintage allows it from a special selection from our domaine, well known for its concentration and its opulence. The modern winemaking style, with optimization of the extraction but without excess, gives a powerful wine with silky tannins. Depending on the vintage, a part more or less is aged 16 months in barrels, and then when the blending is made, is going to spend 6 months in tanks for a perfect integration. Impressive wine, with a significant purity and density, can best be served for tasting between 4 and 15 years at least after the vintage year.
Yield: 30 hl/ha
Agricultural: Sustainable
Vinification:
The grenaches of this wine come from our best parcels of old vine on the famous « galets roulés terroirs ». After manual selection of the best grapes on a sorting table, the grapes are crushed and destemmed before falling by gravity into our fermentation tanks. Long maceration and soft extractions help to get these both powerful and flexible features of our wines. About 60% of this wine is aged in oak barrels and demi-muid for 18 months.
Food and wine pairing: This wine still in its youth is best with red meat like a beautiful rib of beef but also, for instance, an apricot tagine of lamb, duck breast with cherries, then after about ten years a hare “à la royale”
Tasting Note: A delicate nose, mingling aromas of tobacco, violets, cedar and milk chocolate. The mouth is velvety with aromas of liquorice and cherry, with a persistent chocolatey finish.

Agricultural: Sustainable
Vinification:
Sorting before pressing, gentle pressing of champenois type, fermentation at 20 ° C in new barrels for Roussanne, in barrels of one year for white Grenache and in tank for Clairette. Blend: 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah
La Réserve Secrète – A blending mainly made from centenary Grenache noire from our best parcels and 25 year old Syrah from our ‘’ Terre longue ‘’, a different terroir but full of promise; from time to time a touch of Mourvèdre is added to it. This wine is the pinnacle of our domaine, the spirit of tradition married to modernity plus the knowledge built by all the generations for several centuries: here lies the secret.
Soil: Sandy with galettes
Vineyard Age: 25-30 years
Yield: 3000 bottles at 25 hl/ha
Agricultural: Sustainable
Vinification:
After careful crushing and destemming, the must passes to our vats for maceration and fermentation. These processes take about one month at carefully controlled temperatures with both daily pumping over and hand plunging of the cap. The resultant product is then pressed, and the free-run juice is separated from the press juice in order to be aged separately. Malolactic fermentation follows shortly after. 60% of the wine for Réserve Secrète is aged in new oak barrels for 12 months.
Suggested food association: Chevreuil in sauce “grand veneur” with a confit of bilberries and chestnuts, duck with wild mushroom sauce, stuffed pigeon, capon with truffles, chocolate, clafoutis of cherries, “comté” cheese.
Tasting Notes: A full-bodied, elegant and refined wine, tannic while remaining velvety smooth with black currant, blackberry, toffee, finishing very long on minerals, milk-jam, Havana cigar and cedar-tree aromas.

Maceration lasting 35 days with soft extractions make it possible to obtain these tannins, both powerful and supple, characteristic of our wines. We aged this vintage 60% in concrete tank and 40% in foudre for 18 months.
Suggested food association: Chevreuil in sauce “grand veneur” with a confit of bilberries and chestnuts, duck with wild mushroom sauce, stuffed pigeon, capon with truffles, chocolate gateau, clafoutis of cherries, “comté” cheese
Tasting Notes: A full-bodied, elegant and refined wine, tannic while remaining velvety smooth with gooseberry, toffee, cinnamon, cardamom and sichuan pepper, finishing very long on the palate.

Vin de la Solitude
This wine is a tribute to our ancestor Paul Martin, who was one of the first French Vignerons to sell his wine in bottles in the 18th century under the name “Vin de la Solitude”.
We have reissued the four original labels of « Vin de la Solitude » for this wine.
This wine is elaborated in the state of wine art in the 18th century.
Our researches showed that the blends were very different, where Grenache grape variety did not use to dominate.
The wines were made of a large number of cofermented grape varieties. Macerations were longer than they are nowadays.
Blend:
30% Counoise, 25% hundred year-old Grenache noir, 15% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, 5% Clairette, 5% Bourboulenc, 5% Roussanne, Clairette rose, Grenache blanc.
Yield: 25 hl/hectare, 944 bottles et 100 magnums
Agricultural: Sustainable
Vinification:
All grapes are co-fermented and vinified as whole clusters. This wine is vinified in tronconic wood vats. Each grape variety is harvested at its own maturity, the first variety being the Syrah, picked in early September, and the last being the Counoise, picked in early October. The alcoholic fermentation is very long. For this 2016 vintage, the wine has been macerated 80 days and aged for 18 months in barrel.
Tasting Notes:
Elegant and refined wine, tannic while remaining fresh. Floral nose with small black fruits and spices. A mouth with blackcurrant aromas, subtle tannins and a great length. Storage: Drink now until 2035. Serving temperature: 60F° to 65F°.
