UPDATED: AUG 23, 2020 330ml bottle brewed in Belgium at 7.5%. Clear orange with an average sized active head, shortish duration. Deep banana aromas with some light spritzy watery tangerine on top. Perhaps faintly vegetal. Moderate carbonation. Sweet banana bread notes with some tangerine tang to finish. Not bad, but very sweet – not sure how the added sugar on the ingredients list plays into that, was it just for bottle conditioning or… Anyway, some nice subtle hop notes here, leafy tangerine, and very very pungent Belgian banana yeast – almost bubblegum. Enjoyable, but Leffe is almost always overly sweet and syrupy for me. This is still one of their better offerings. Worth checking out to see what Whitbread Goldings are like, or if you want a golden syrupy banana bread of a beer. Composition is pretty good. Leffe’s main beers suffer too much from mass-production and syrupiness, but slightly more boutique offerings such as this or their Tripel are worth your time to try.

The Beer
Every brewer knows that you cannot make beer without hops. And when it comes to that essential plant, only the best is good enough for the Leffe abbey beers. The brewery’s main focus for the Royale range is on the selection of the finest hops – hops determines the identity, character, taste and colour of each of these beers. The range is of a collection of unique degustation beers in which single hop varieties take centre stage.
Leffe Royale Whitbread Golding has an amazingly subtle bitterness accompanied by impressions of lemon and resins. Alongside this it has an exceptionally fruity taste.
The master brewer travelled the globe in search of the most suitable hop for this subtly bitter beer with its aromas of yellow fruits. His choice came down to three different hop varieties, including the Whitbread Golding, a noble hop variety from the Poperinge region in West Flanders. The light, resinous and citrusy taste of the hop dominates, in the subtlest possible way, the banana and vanilla tastes from the yeast.
The Leffe Royale selection also includes Cascade IPA, Mount Hood, Crystal and Mapuche. The brewery’s traditional range consists of Leffe Brune, Blonde, Triple, Ruby, Radieuse, Nectar and Bière de Noël.
